  • Job Type: Full-time, on-site
  • Schedule: 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays

About the Department

The Honolulu Emergency Services Department is dedicated to providing high-quality, rapid emergency medical services to the community. Paramedics and EMTs operate in a coordinated system with base station physicians and public safety partners to deliver care during medical emergencies, mass casualty incidents, and patient transport.

Paramedic Job: Qualifications

  • Education: High school graduation and completion of an EMT-Paramedic training program equivalent to the Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners EMT-P requirements
  • License: Current Hawaii EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) Certificate

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license (automobile/Type 3)
  • Current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen for unrestricted employment

Role Description

As a Mobile Emergency Care Specialist (Paramedic), you will provide pre-hospital ALS care, make independent clinical decisions under standing orders, and supervise EMTs on the scene. You will play a vital role in triage, emergency interventions, and patient transport to hospitals, ensuring optimal patient outcomes in urgent and high-risk situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct rapid patient assessments and implement ALS interventions
  • Serve as the on-scene medical lead, coordinating with EMTs and base station physicians
  • Perform triage and prioritize care, including during mass casualty incidents
  • Drive and/or accompany ambulances responding to emergency calls
  • Supervise and support EMTs and trainees during emergency operations
  • Prepare accurate and complete medical-legal documentation
  • Work in irregular hours, challenging environments, and under hazardous conditions
