Rare Eye Procedure in Chennai Restores Vision of Mumbai Doctor After 10 Years of Blindness

Rare Eye Procedure Restores Vision After 10 Years

An amazing eye procedure that was performed in Chennai helped a 44-year-old doctor from Mumbai to regain his lost vision after nearly 10 years of blindness. This complex case was performed by specialists at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, where an eye surgery was performed after an advanced and meticulously planned procedure. This provided the patient with a second chance for vision.

The doctor, who is a practising gynaecologist, had been suffering from severe glaucoma and a few other serious eye complications from past 10 years. She had gone through many failed surgeries, and the condition had begun to worsen over time. This carefully designed eye procedure changed everything for her and restored her vision.

A Decade of Vision Loss

The patient suffered from vision loss caused by advanced glaucoma and many intraocular issues. Gradually, her vision was lost completely, and her right eye stopped responding to light. After multiple consultations, this reduced vision could not be treated.

When she visited the hospital in Chennai, the doctors who were present there conducted a detailed examination and found that the artificial lens that was placed in her left eye had shifted its position from the normal placement. This lens was pressing against her iris and cornea, which caused the front layers of her eye to fuse together, which is a rare and very serious condition.

Doctors explained that there was no chance of restoring her eyesight without a specialised eye procedure.

What Made This Eye Procedure Different?

The surgery was led by Dr. Soosan Jacob, Director and Chief at the hospital’s Refractive and Cornea Foundation. The team removed the displaced artificial lens and used an advanced technique known as 5F-ISHF to implant a new intraocular lens in the patient’s eye.

Unlike any other methods which needs creation of flaps or flanges, this eye procedure does not require it. The surgeons instead create a small pocket inside the layers of the eye to insert the lens using a microscopic needle. This process ensures that the stability and position of the lens are maintained closer to its natural location.

After implanting the lens, doctors carefully separated the fused layers of the eye one after another and restored the damaged structures.

In addition to lens implantation, doctors carefully separated the fused layers of the eye one by one and reconstructed the damaged structures. The entire eye procedure required extreme precision because the tissues were fragile after years of damage.

According to the surgical team, this innovative eye procedure is especially helpful in complex cases where there is little or no support to place a lens safely.

Vision Returns After Years in Darkness

Following the eye procedure, the patient regained 6/24 vision in her left eye. While her right eye remains untreatable, the restored vision in one eye has transformed her daily life.

She is now able to walk independently, eat without assistance, and manage routine activities on her own. Doctors say that as healing continues, her eyesight may improve further. There is hope that she may even return to practising medicine in the future.

Why Is This Case Important?

This successful eye procedure highlights the importance of early glaucoma detection and timely medical care. It also shows how advanced surgical techniques can restore vision even in the most difficult situations.

For many patients living with severe eye disorders, this case offers hope that modern eye procedures can make what seems impossible, possible.
