PhD Admission 2026—About the Program:

NCBS–TIFR invites applications for the PhD Programme – January 2026 Session. This prestigious doctoral program aims to train outstanding researchers in modern biology through a combination of advanced coursework, hands-on research, and mentorship by leading scientists. Students will engage in a dynamic research environment encompassing molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, ecology, biophysics, and interdisciplinary life sciences.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission:

  • Master’s degree in any branch of biology, OR a 5-year integrated degree (e.g., MBBS, BDS), OR a professional master’s degree (e.g., M.Pharm, M.Tech).
  • Qualification in at least one of the following national-level fellowships or scholarship exams with the 95th percentile or above (valid as of 1 January 2026):
  • CSIR/UGC–JRF
  • DBT
  • ICMR
  • DST–INSPIRE
  • GATE

Fellowship and Benefits:

Selected candidates will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of ₹37,000 per month (plus HRA as applicable) for the first two years, along with a standard annual contingency grant. Upon successful registration as a PhD candidate, the fellowship will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) with a stipend of ₹42,000 per month (plus HRA as applicable). Students may also avail themselves of their own national fellowship or the TIFR fellowship, subject to eligibility.
