Job Overview

Applications are invited for a Trust Doctor (ST3-9) in Ophthalmology. You will need to be experienced in Ophthalmology to be able to participate in both general and sub-specialty clinics, and theatres and lasers if appropriate.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a dedicated team of junior doctors led by six Consultant Ophthalmologists in a thriving Ophthalmology service. The service provides general ophthalmic services to a local population of approximately 500,000, with sub-specialty interests in oculoplastics, glaucoma, anterior segment, and medical retina.

This is a non-training post, but provides excellent learning opportunities to help prepare candidates for primary qualifications in Ophthalmology, provided the relevant minimum training period has been obtained.

Bath is an historic World Heritage city with a wide variety of cultural, social and sporting opportunities to enjoy. It is the gateway to the west country with access to Stonehenge, the Cotswolds and Devon and Cornwall, yet is only 90 minutes from London by train. The department and the hospital provide a progressive and friendly atmosphere in which to work, and there is an active postgraduate teaching programme, in which you will be involved.

Main Duties of the Job:

  • To deal with day to day eye casualties and emergencies.
  • To assist in out-patient clinics. These may be unsupervised clinics in community hospitals.
  • To look after the in-patients from an ophthalmic and general point of view. Every patient should be seen by a doctor at least once a day and it is particularly important that the postholder should complete ward rounds over the weekends when they are on duty. The postholder is responsible for all the in-patients when they are on duty and should be prepared to see any in-patients at the request of the Ward Sister if the other junior doctors are not available. Routine pre-op assessment is now undertaken by the nursing staff.

There will be opportunities to do audits and original research projects. One supervised operating session would be available per week, although more could be available if the candidate is be a competent cataract surgeon.
There may be a 1 in 5 on call commitment.
