Maldives has introduced a generational smoking ban where anyone born after January 1, 2007, is strictly prohibited from using or purchasing tobacco products for global public health. This new law took effect on November 1, 2025, aiming to create a tobacco-free generation.

A World-First Tobacco Ban:

The Maldives began implementing a smoking ban on Saturday, making it the only nation with a prohibition on tobacco, according to the health ministry. So, for anyone born after January 1, 2007, the law strictly prohibits; if violated, it carries a penalty and punishment under the law.

President Muizzu Leads Nationwide Tobacco Ban:

This initiative was led by President Mohamed Muizzu to protect public health and promote tobacco tobacco-free generation, came into effect this year on November 1, 2025.

Rules and Penalties:

This Smoking ban applies to all forms of tobacco being sold in the Maldives, and retailers must verify age before selling the products. The individuals who were born after January 1, 2007, are prohibited from purchasing and selling tobacco to an underage person, and carry a penalty of 50,000 rufiyaa ($3,200).

Ban Extends to Tourists and Vaping Products:

The ban applies to all citizens across the island nations, including the visitors. The Maldives also maintains a ban on selling, distributing, possessing and importing and vaping products for all ages. Also, using vape devices carries a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa ($320).

Global Context:

A similar generational ban is going on in Britain, which is still under legislative process, where New Zealand, the first country to enact such a law against smoking, repealed it in November 2023, less than a year after it was introduced.

With this bold public health initiative, the Maldives has set a global example to fight against tobacco addiction. It marks a significant step towards safeguarding the future generations. This is the first nation to implement a permanent generational smoking ban and foster a healthier, smoke-free society. This bold action positions the Maldives as a hope for the global fight against tobacco.
