Cipla Foundation and IISc Launch Pulmonary Medicine Centre in Bengaluru

Cipla Foundation has partnered with IISc (Indian Institute of Science) to start the Cipla Foundation Centre for Pulmonary Medicine at Tata Medical School in Bangalore. This centre will provide advanced care for patients with issues regarding the respiratory system by providing advanced diagnosis, outpatient and inpatient services, and a specialised intensive care unit (ICU) 

Why is Pulmonary Medicine a Priority?

Respiratory Diseases like COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung disease are increasing day by day and challenging many health systems across India. Rising air pollution, tobacco use, and lack of access to trained pulmonologists are the key factors for the need for specialised medicine services. 

The medical centre will focus on:

  • Deliver quality care for patients
  • Providing early detection and better treatments for lung diseases
  • Developing India-specific guidelines for COPD, asthma, and ILD
  • Advanced research in biomarkers, pharmacogenomics, AI-based diagnosis, and pulmonary therapeutics

Research and Innovation 

The centre will serve as a hub for research and innovation in pulmonary medicine, innovating new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat lung diseases:

  • Development of better diagnostic tools for respiratory issues
  • Study the genetic factors that affect the treatment response
  • Integrating AI and technology for diagnosis
  • Research on better therapies and treatment approaches

Training the Next Generation Specialists

The major goal of the centre is skill development, including:

  • Training pulmonologists and allied health professionals
  • Building research platforms for medical professionals
  • Hosting many workshops and collaborations to promote the sharing of knowledge 

Community Engagement and Preventive Care

The centre will support the health of communities by:

  • Early lung screening programs
  • Awareness of air quality
  • Campaigns for the prevention of cancer
  • Smoking prevention campaigns
  • Preventive health education 

The Long-Term Vision

Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, the Director of IISc, said that respiratory diseases are one of the most common lung health diseases that are affecting the public in large numbers, especially in regions with prolonged poor air quality. 

Anurag Mishra, Head of the Cipla Foundation, highlighted that the partnership focuses on their mission of “Caring for Life,” that supporting the public health systems to benefit the underserved communities.
