Job Description:
Clinical Laboratory Assistants (CLAs) perform duties in the laboratory that are above the complexity level of a phlebotomist, but not yet to the level of a medical laboratory technician. They collect specimens, process samples, perform limited waived laboratory testing, assist technicians and technologists with maintenance and reagent preparation, plate samples for microbiology, and prepare specimens for testing from alternative laboratory sources. This lab assistant job plays a vital role in supporting diagnostic accuracy and maintaining laboratory workflow efficiency in hospital environments.
Qualifications:
Education:

Minimum of High School Diploma or Equivalent
Licenses/Certification:
- Medical Lab Assistant certification preferred but not required
- State license/registration as required by state
- Current BLS preferred
Experience:

1–3 years clinical laboratory experience
Key Responsibilities:
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log and brings discrepancies to unit personnel
- Verifies patient identification and obtains blood specimens through venipunctures and fingersticks
- Maintains specimen integrity using aseptic technique and department procedures
- Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays in collaboration with nursing personnel
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and recording collection times
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and recording results in the quality-control log
- Ensures safe and healthy work environment compliance with regulations
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting physicians, pathologists, or nursing staff
- Participates in educational opportunities and professional development
- Adheres to hospital policies, federal, state, local requirements, and TJC standards
- Assists with laboratory clerical work
- Answers phones, receives specimens, and performs preanalytical sample preparation including send-outs
- Enhances laboratory workflow by loading instruments, setting up plates, and performing waived testing
- Performs pending log resolution
- Communicates critical values to care providers
