Job Description:

The Research Fellowship in Transplant Surgery is a post-graduate research residency position managed in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan.

This exciting program is designed to support research education for:

  • General surgery residents interested in abdominal transplant surgery
  • Postdoctoral scholars with interest in organ transplant policy and outcomes

The program provides comprehensive health services research training tailored to the Fellow’s subject matter and methodological interests. Fellows receive access to a formal research education curriculum run through the established fellowship program at CHOP. The fellowship offers exposure to Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Medicare and Medicaid claims databases, Clinical registries and Electronic Health Records (EHR), Research Data Warehouse (RDW) with data from over four million unique patients.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal professional doctorate (M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M.)
  • Graduate of an accredited medical school
  • Enrolled in a surgical residency program
  • United States citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • Excellent academic standing with permission from Program Director and Chairman

Fellowship Standards:

  • Minimum 40 hours per week
  • 24-month structured fellowship
  • Exceeds minimum standards required by residency review committee
  • Formal mentorship by extramurally funded investigators

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in formalized instruction in health services and clinical research
  • Training in biostatistics, manuscript preparation, research ethics, and grant writing
  • Collaborate with surgeon-scientists, economists, sociologists, and qualitative researchers

  • Engage in CHOP research bootcamps and weekly academic sessions
