Job Description

This medical research fellow role focuses on hepatology, combining 50% clinical research and 50% clinical duties. The position is designed as a structured training contract to support professional development in both research and patient care.

The role involves supporting clinical trials, particularly NIHR studies, and delivering outpatient hepatology services. Candidates will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, contributing to both commercial and non-commercial trials. This hepatology job starts on 2nd September 2026 and runs for 12 months as a fixed-term training contract under NHS guidelines.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with license to practise
  • MRCP with PACES
  • ST5 or above in Gastroenterology
  • Minimum one year experience in hepatology or gastroenterology
  • Strong clinical judgement and patient management skills

Desirable

  • MRCP Gastroenterology specialist certificate
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
  • Completed hepatology registrar training

Skills Required

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Compassionate and calm approach in clinical settings

Key Responsibilities

Research Responsibilities

  • Support hepatology clinical trials including setup, recruitment, and monitoring
  • Identify and recruit patients for ongoing studies
  • Collect and manage clinical trial data
  • Participate in site initiation visits and safety monitoring
  • Develop independent research projects or academic interests

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Conduct two hepatology outpatient clinics per week
  • Provide registrar-level clinical support within the department
  • Assist inpatient teams and perform endoscopy procedures
  • Participate in teaching and departmental administration
  • Ensure patient-centered care at all times
