Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HIM, healthcare, or related field (Required)
  • Experience in ambulatory outpatient and risk adjustment coding (Required)
  • Additional experience may substitute for degree requirements
  • CCS or Certified Professional Coder (CPC – AAPC) certification (Required)
  • CRC certification (Preferred)

Healthcare Job Description:

This healthcare job reports to the Primary Care Service Line Director of Quality, with an affiliation to the ambulatory billing and compliance team. The primary objective of this position is to improve accuracy in coding, compliance, and clinical documentation. The Certified Coder (CPC or CCS-P) is responsible for detailed analysis of outpatient medical record documentation to ensure appropriate and correct coding for ambulatory clinic visits.

Healthcare Job – Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and interpret patient medical record documentation, such as progress notes, operative reports, and discharge summaries
  • Assign ICD-10-CM and CPT 4 codes accurately and timely manner
  • Maintain knowledge of coding guidelines and reimbursement requirements
  • Educate staff and physicians to support accurate data collection
  • Review pre-billed claims and secured authorizations
  • Conduct independent audits to educate providers on correct documentation practices
  • Identify payor-related issues and report findings to management
  • Coordinate with the Physicians’ Billing & Compliance Office
  • Recommend policy and procedural improvements
  • Manage special projects with detailed action plans
  • Ensure quality and cost-effective operations using EPIC-generated reports
  • Perform duties according to Penn Medicine policies
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned
