Job Description:
This medical lab technician job is a full-time, regular day shift role based on-site at UPMC Somerset. Laboratory professionals work as generalists, gaining hands-on experience across all areas of the laboratory. As part of growing UPMC careers, this position supports accurate and timely diagnostic testing that directly impacts patient care, treatment decisions, and clinical outcomes.
Qualifications:
Laboratory Support Technician
Must meet one of the following criteria:
- Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification AND 1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab
- Successful completion of a 50wk U.S. military medical laboratory training course
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ASCP Certifications Preferred:
- Medical Technologist MT(ASCP)
- Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP)
- Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP)
- Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA)
- or equivalent ASCP Certification
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
Key Responsibilities:
- Processing specimens according to established protocols.
- Ensuring precise, high-quality testing within required timelines.
- Recognizing critical or abnormal results and taking appropriate action.
- Troubleshooting issues with instruments, specimens, supplies, or methodologies.
- Contributing to test development and evaluation of new equipment and techniques.
- Performing and documenting quality control procedures.
- Reporting incidents or concerns to supervisors or pathologists promptly.
- Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, including minor repairs.
- Entering patient demographic and test information into the lab information system.
- Assisting in training new employees and students in a supportive, team-focused environment.
