GE HealthCare–Medtronic Partnership Brings Real-Time Surgical Imaging with Ultrasound Integration

GE HealthCare–Medtronic Partnership

Things will not always go as planned sometimes. Likewise, surgery doesn’t always go exactly as planned in the operating room. There will be many changes, and the plans will collapse. The human body can shift, respond, and change even after the best scans taken before a surgery. GE HealthCare and Medtronic are making a partnership to make a real difference in surgical imaging.

In a significant advancement for modern surgery, GE HealthCare and Medtronic have strengthened their collaboration to improve how surgeons see and respond during procedures. Their latest innovation combines advanced navigation with ultrasound, making surgeries more adaptive and precise.

GE HealthCare integrated bkActiv, an ultrasound technology, into Medtronic’s Stealth AXiS platform. This system supports real-time surgical imaging by providing surgeons with up-to-date visuals during the procedure.

Why Real-Time Imaging Matters for Surgeons?

Today, most advanced surgeries rely on MRI or CT Scans taken before the procedure with the Stealth AXiS platform. These systems allow surgeons to perform detailed planning, such as creating patient-specific anatomical maps, especially in neurosurgery and spine procedures.

While these are essential, the body can change during surgery due to tissue deformation, fluid shifts, or resection. For example, in brain surgery, a shift in brain tissue, called “brain shift,” can affect the accuracy of the procedure.

By incorporating ultrasound from GE HealthCare’s bkActiv system, surgeons can see what’s happening at that moment, not what things looked like earlier. This allows them to continuously update their understanding of the operative field. This dynamic feedback loop reduces reliance on static imaging alone.

How does the integration of bkActiv and the Stealth AXiS platform actually work?

The integration between GE HealthCare’s bkActiv and Medtronic’s Stealth AXiS is designed as a plug-and-play system. This means that it can be deployed without major workflow disruptions.

Key technical capabilities include:

  • Real-time image fusion: Live ultrasound images are displayed alongside preoperative MRI or CT scans within the Stealth AXiS interface
  • Co-registration capability: Aligns intraoperative ultrasound data with preoperative imaging datasets for spatial accuracy
  • High-resolution imaging algorithms: Ensure that there is consistent image quality across varying tissue densities
  • Intraoperative control functions: Surgeons can freeze, capture, store, and review images instantly
  • Adjustable display integration: Surgeons can directly visualize without breaking sterile workflow

The integration of GE HealthCare imaging and Medtronic Navigation systems ensures that real-time surgical imaging becomes part of routine surgical decision-making rather than an added complexity.

Where is this system being used?

Medtronic received FDA clearance from the USA for the Stealth AXiS system for spine procedures in February. Following that, the clearance was expanded to include cranial and ENT procedures in March. These milestones significantly broadened the platform’s clinical utility.

The system now supports a wider range of intraoperative scenarios with the addition of ultrasound. They are,

  • Neurosurgery: It helps track tumor removal and adjust for brain shift
  • Spine surgery: It improves visualization around delicate structures
  • ENT procedures: It supports navigation in tight anatomical spaces

Across all these areas, real-time surgical imaging gives surgeons a way to double-check their path as they go.

What makes this GE HealthCare–Medtronic Partnership important?

GE HealthCare and Medtronic have worked together for years, but this integration feels like a more direct step toward smarter surgery.

Instead of relying only on pre-surgery planning, surgeons now have a system that adapts with them. The combination of navigation (from Medtronic) and ultrasound imaging (from GE HealthCare) creates a more responsive environment in the operating room.

And importantly, it doesn’t require teams to completely change how they work. The setup is designed to fit into existing workflows, which makes adoption easier.

A small shift that could have a big impact

From a technical point of view, the idea is simple: better information during surgery leads to better decisions.

But in practice, that can mean:

  • More accurate procedures
  • Fewer unexpected complications
  • Greater confidence for surgeons

Real-time surgical imaging may not replace preoperative scans, but it clearly strengthens them in healthcare.

With Stealth AXiS now supporting integrated bkActiv ultrasound, GE HealthCare and Medtronic are moving toward a model in which surgery is not just planned in advance but continuously guided in the moment.

And in many ways, that’s what modern surgery has been missing.
