Junior Fellowship Opportunity: Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practise
  • Minimum 2 years post-qualification experience
  • At least 6 months of NHS experience in ICU or surgical critical care
  • Previous experience in an acute specialty
  • Completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent

Desirable

  • FRCA / MRCP / FRCS / MCEM or equivalent
  • Current ALS/ATLS certification
  • Prior ICU skill exposure

About the Role

The Junior Fellow position in the Surgical High Dependency Unit (SHDU) provides hands-on training and clinical exposure in the management of surgical critical care patients, with approximately 1,500 admissions annually. The role is designed for junior doctors aiming to strengthen their competencies in critical care, perioperative medicine, and organ support, particularly within a surgical setting. Applicants with prior experience in ICU or anesthesia are preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the daily management of surgical high dependency and critical care patients
  • Attend and contribute to consultant-led ward rounds
  • Assist in adjusting organ support measures following appropriate training
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and meticulous clinical documentation
  • Deliver comprehensive handovers to medical colleagues
  • Engage in structured teaching sessions, simulations, and MDT meetings
  • Contribute to clinical audits and ongoing research trials
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities
